Our Success Rate

In December 2009 we completed an internal audit on many aspects of our therapy practice. There was no selection: All clients for the past two years, who attended more than one appointment for any reason except to stop smoking, were included. It is not scientific in that standardised measuring tools (such as the Hamilton Anxiety Scale or Beck Depression Inventory) were not systematically used, and there are no placebo or comparator groups. Nonetheless outcomes were honestly based on both my own professional impressions and actual feedback from clients. We are highly pleased with the results.

No. clients: 164
No. sessions conducted: 1324
Average no. sessions (excluding 3 unusual cases): 7
No. clients who completed an adequate course of treatment: 119 or 73%
No. clients who were judged professionally to have dropped out too early: 45 or 27% (note that no one was considered an early drop out who had attended at least 8 sessions)

Reasons for coming to therapy: Vast majority - stress, anxiety disorders, loss of confidence, relationship stress, depression, emotional problems, psychosomatic symptoms, obsessional states, and eating disorders. Most clients had been suffering for a period of greater than 6 months.

No. clients for whom hypnotherapy and counselling at our practice was the only method of treatment: 125 or 76% (not including a few receiving miscellaneous complementary therapies)
No. clients who also received some form of medication from a doctor: 39 or 24%

Outcomes

14 (9%) outcomes were unknown (most often when short treatments were given for phobias and the benefit could not be tested until some time after treatment had finished)

Of the known outcomes for all clients who completed their treatment:

112 or 97% got better

Break down:

Much better or completely better: 83 or 75%
Partial benefit: 25 or 22%
Small benefit: 4 or 3%
No change: 3 or 3% (rounded up)

Impressively, even of the known outcomes for early drop-outs, 65% still improved.
